Pakistan’s newly-appointed red-ball coach Jason Gillespie opened up in a podcast for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday.
Speaking on the podcast, Gillespie shed light on his coaching style as he gears up for the Pakistan assignment.
“Look, I look up to teams. I like hardworking players and believe in discipline. We are in an entertainment business, and I just want to showcase our skills to the crowds, to our supporters. I want to play games and perform that mean something, and, more importantly, I want to win,” Gillespie said.
“So, that’s what you’ll see with the Pakistan side. I’m really excited, and I’m looking forward to getting to know all the players, the staff, and I want good communication with the captain and the players. I’m really keen to see how they see themselves, how they want to be seen, and how they want to go about it. And, if I can help facilitate that in any way, then that will be the key for me. So, let's go out there on this journey together and see what we can achieve,” he added.
Gillespie will take charge of the Pakistan team from the series against Bangladesh (at home in August) followed by England (at home in October) and South Africa (away in December) in the 2024-25 season.
“Obviously, the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 for Pakistan is going to be a challenge; there’s no question about that. But, we’ll just take each series as it comes,” he said.
“The first opportunity that I’ll be involved in will be against Bangladesh at home, and I am looking forward to it. We’ll just take each series and each Test match as it comes.
“Look, Test cricket is a challenge, there’s no doubt about that. But if you prepare well, put your best foot forward, then we’ll give ourselves the best chance to have some success.”
